Privacy Policy

The short version

Current collects only what's needed to run the app: your account, the catches and posts you create, and your device location while you're using the app. We don't sell your data, we don't run third-party ad networks, and you can delete your account and everything tied to it from inside the app at any time.

Who runs Current

Current is published by Current Fishing LLC (Michigan, USA). If you have a privacy question, email jbradfield@current-fishing.com.

Account information

When you create an account, we store your email address and the display name you choose. Authentication is handled by Firebase Authentication (Google). We never see or store your password — Firebase holds a hashed credential we can't read.

Content you create

Catches you log, posts you share, lures you save, fishing spots you save, and messages you send in trip chats are stored in Cloud Firestore (Google). Photos you attach are stored in Firebase Storage (Google). Posts you mark public are visible to other Current users; everything else is private to your account or to the friends and trip members you've chosen to share with.

Location

With your permission, we read your device's location while the app is in the foreground. We use it to (1) show fishing conditions and species near you, (2) reverse-geocode to your home state, and (3) optionally geo-tag catches and posts you create.

There is one background exception, and it only happens when you ask for it: if you start a trip, Current records your route in the background for as long as that trip is running, so the trip summary can map where you fished. Tracking stops the moment you end the trip. The route is stored on that trip only — you can view it, delete the trip to delete it, and it is removed with your account. We do not track your location in the background at any other time, and we never build a location history outside the trips you start and the geo-tags you attach yourself.

You can revoke location access at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy → Location Services, or Android Settings → Apps → Current → Permissions; the app will continue to work in a region-fallback mode.

Photos

Photos you take or pick from your library are uploaded to Firebase Storage so they can appear on your catches and posts. We do not scan your camera roll, and we do not upload photos you haven't explicitly attached to something.

Lure and fish identification

When you ask Current to identify a lure or a fish in a photo, the image is sent to a Cloud Function we operate. The function forwards the image to Anthropic's Claude API to perform the recognition and returns the result to your device. We do not store the image on our servers beyond the duration of the request, and Anthropic processes the image under its API privacy terms.

Subscriptions and purchases

Pro and Elite purchases made in the app are processed by Apple on iOS and by Google Play on Android. Pro purchases made on current-fishing.com are processed by Stripe. We use RevenueCat to verify purchases and to know whether your Pro entitlement is active. RevenueCat receives an identifier tied to your Current account, the product you bought, and the receipt metadata. Your card details go directly to Apple or Stripe — we never see or store your card number, and we never see your Apple ID password.

Shop orders

When you buy from the shop, we store your name, email address, shipping address, and what you ordered so we can fulfill the order, show it on your account page, and handle returns. To deliver your order we share your name and shipping address with the parties who need them: Stripe (tackle payments), Shopify (apparel orders), Shippo (shipping rates and labels), and the warehouse and print partners who pack and ship your items. They receive only what's needed to get your package to you — never your browsing activity or your Current content.

Website analytics

current-fishing.com uses Cloudflare Web Analytics, a privacy-first measurement tool: no cookies, no cross-site tracking, no individual profiles. It tells us things like which pages are visited and from which country — not who you are.

Diagnostics

We do not run third-party advertising SDKs, behavioral analytics SDKs, or social tracking pixels, and we do not ship a crash-reporting SDK. Errors are written to our own server logs when one of our Cloud Functions fails; those logs can contain your Current user id, but never the contents of your catches, posts or messages.

Who we share data with

Other Current users see the posts, profile, and friend graph you choose to share with them. Apart from that, we share data only with the infrastructure providers needed to run the app:

We do not sell or rent your data to anyone. We do not use your data to train AI models.

Deleting your account

You can delete your account at any time from Profile → Delete account. Deletion is irreversible and removes your profile, catches, posts, lures, spots, friend graph, and trip memberships. We retain anonymized aggregates (counts, no identifying info) and any moderation history tied to reports filed against your account. You can also email jbradfield@current-fishing.com and we will delete your account on request.

Children

Current is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has created an account, email us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

If we make a material change to what we collect or how we use it, we'll announce it in the app via the broadcast banner before the change takes effect. Continuing to use Current after a change means you accept the updated policy.
